Lord Winston urges modestly in education

The British professor addressed the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference in Scotland today

The HMC Conference for independent schools enjoyed a variety of speakers at this year's event in St Andrew's, Scotland, including the British professor Lord Robert Winston.

Speaking to an audience of Headmasters and Headmistresses of some of the world's leading independent schools, Lord Winston boldly claimed the National Health Service was actually the National Disease Service, before explaining that a change in the NHS can only be made with education.

He went on to explain the neurologies involved in teaching and how, as humans, the first 18-20 years are unique in the ways we learn. He asked the audience to consider the possibilities of using genetics to enable us to run twice as fast for 25 times longer, an achievement recently made with mice using the same techniques.

Using an illustration of a Hubble image of deep space, Lord Winston concluded his one-hour talk by urging Headteachers to 'understand there are things we cannot understand' and that 'we need a good deal of modesty in the education of children today'.
